Alexandra and Nearby
Alexandra has many historic sites from Central Otago's formative years of the Gold Rush. The international reputation of the Otago Central Rail Trail as a walking and mountain-biking trail is well established.
You can easily walk to the town centre where there is a variety of cafés, restaurants and shopping options.
4WD enthusiasts enjoy the many trails in the area, 4WD trails permeate the surrounding foothills and mountains.
Fishing is a popular pastime on the Clutha and Manuherikia rivers and also the local dams. Lake Dunstan has also gained good stocks of sizeable trout and salmon.
In winter this Central Otago town has an artificial ice rink (Ice Line). With skates to hire and curling to learn, this provides great entertainment.
The Aquatic Centre provides an extensive range of water and swimming pool activities including spas, saunas and a therapeutic hot pool. The Aquatic Centre is a heated complex and open year round.
Alexandra is 'Hour Town'.
Approximately an hour's drive to Queenstown or Wanaka for day trips either for the winter snow or in summer tramping, bungy-jumping, jet boat rides and other outdoor thrill-seeking adventures,
Alexandra is an awesome base for a holiday. Naseby, Ranfurly and St Bathans are also approx a one hour drive for more sedate activities – take your time to enjoy the views or go curling (Naseby curling year-round).
